Peter Mattei as Jochanaan alongside soprano Elza van den Heever in Claus Guth’s new production of Strauss’s Salome!
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met production, Strauss’s searing one-act masterpiece in its first new production at the company in two decades. Director Claus Guth reimagines the biblical tale, filtered through Oscar Wilde’s haunting play, in a psychologically charged Victorian setting, rich with symbolism and chiaroscuro. Soprano Elza van den Heever stars as the tormented heroine Salome, opposite celebrated baritone Peter Mattei as the prophet Jochanaan.
Salome is on stage through May 24 and in cinemas on May 17.
