Swedish dramatic baritone John Lundgren is recognized for his expressive stage presence and versatile portrayal of opera’s complex antiheroes and Wagnerian roles. His repertoire spans signature characters such as Wotan, Telramund, and Der fliegende Holländer, alongside iconic dramatic roles including Scarpia (Tosca), Pizarro (Fidelio), and the title role in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle.
Lundgren studied at the Opera Academy in Copenhagen and began his professional career as a soloist with the Royal Danish Theatre, making his debut as Schaunard in La Bohème. During his time with the company, he performed a wide range of major roles, including Wozzeck, Count di Luna (Il trovatore), Giorgio Germont (La traviata), Posa (Don Carlo), Paolo Albioni (Simone Boccanegra) and Amonasro in Aida for the inauguration of Copenhagen’s new opera house.
As an international guest artist, he has appeared at leading venues worldwide, including the Royal Opera House, Berlin State Opera, Zurich Opera House, and the Bayreuth and Bregenz Festivals. His broad repertoire further includes roles such as Jochanaan (Salome), Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde), Amfortas (Parsifal), Barak (Die Frau ohne Schatten), and Nabucco.
Throughout his career, he has collaborated with distinguished conductors—such as Christian Thielemann, Kirill Petrenko, and Adam Fischer—and renowned stage directors including Keith Warner, Claus Loy, and Frank Castorf.
His achievements have been recognized with the Birgit Nilsson Scholarship (2006), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog awarded by H.M. Queen Margrethe II of Denmark (2010), and his appointment as Swedish Court Singer (Hovsångare) by H.M. King Carl XVI Gustaf (2021).
