Anton Ljungqvist
"... the voice breathes a vocal nobility that is rarely heard these days ..." One of many qualities that yielded Anton Ljungquist the Joel Berglund Scholarship. He has also made a name for himself as a true acting talent!
The Swedish baritone Anton Ljungqvist made his role debut as Eugene Onegin at Wermland Opera in the previous season — a performance that earned him a nomination for the 2025 Opera Prize by Tidskriften Opera magazine.
Recent engagements include Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus at both Bergen National Opera and Wermland Opera, as well as Amonasro in Aida, Tonio in Pagliacci, and Betto di Signa in Gianni Schicchi at Wermland Opera.
A frequent and much-appreciated guest at Wermland Opera, Ljungqvist has appeared in their Trilogi production, performing three major roles: Figaro in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, and Don Fernando in Beethoven’s Fidelio. He has also sung Mr Gedge in Britten’s Albert Herring, Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, and the role of Edgar in the musical Titanic.
At Göteborg Opera, he has appeared as Schaunard in La bohème, Doctor Grenvil in La traviata, and as Horatio and the First Gravedigger in Thomas’s Hamlet.
Ljungqvist has also been heard at Malmö Opera in several productions, among them the role of the Father in the world premiere of Catharina Backman’s On the Other Side of the Sea, the Old Poet Lax M in the world premiere of Philip Glass’s Circus Days and Nights (a co-production with Cirkus Cirkör), as well as the Father in The Flurry Tale, Zuniga in Carmen, and the Genie (Anden) in A Thousand and One Nights by David Fjellström.
Further engagements include Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at Folkoperan in Stockholm, and Dandini in La Cenerentola at Bergen National Opera. He has also performed Johan in the contemporary opera Alt om min familie and taken part in Bergen Opera’s production of Bernstein’s Candide. In addition, Ljungqvist appeared as Collatinus in Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia at the Vattnäs Concert Barn.
On the concert stage, Ljungqvist has performed a wide range of repertoire, including Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem, Bach’s St John Passion, Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation Mass, Fauré’s Requiem, Duruflé’s Requiem, and Fredrik Sixten’s Requiem. In 2017, he was a guest soloist in Berwaldhallen and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra’s traditional Epiphany Concerts, broadcast by Swedish Television (SVT). He has also sung Mitjuka in Boris Godunov with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under Kent Nagano, with performances in both Gothenburg and Stockholm concert halls, and has toured extensively with Wermland Opera in concert. He also appears on the recording of Jacopo Foroni’s Cristina, regina di Svezia, singing the role of Arnold Messenius
Anton Ljungqvist graduated from the University College of Opera in Stockholm in 2011 and has been awarded several scholarships, including those from the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Vadstena Academy, and the Joel Berglund Foundation.

"Anton Ljungqvist’s Onegin is a narcissistic social climber, constantly bored by the lives of those around him—like a brat from Stureplan suddenly stranded in the countryside. This role demands a singer with both charisma and vocal edge, and Ljungqvist delivers on both counts. I have never heard him in finer vocal form." Eugen Onegin/Wermland Opera 2025
